Brand before logo: what to decide first

Abstract identity composition with a black circle and orange arch

A logo is the last thing a brand needs and the first thing most people ask for. Start with the decisions that make it work.

Decide who you are for

A brand that tries to appeal to everyone becomes invisible. Choose the customer you serve best and let the rest follow.

That decision shapes the tone, the visuals and the offer.

Say one thing clearly

Write the single sentence you want customers to remember. If it takes a paragraph, the positioning is not finished.

The identity then has a job: to make that sentence feel true at a glance.

Then design the system

Colour, type, imagery and tone of voice should work together across your website, social, packaging and documents.

Document the rules so anyone on your team, or any supplier, can use the brand without guessing.
